Kratos – once a mindless killing machine who never saw a problem that couldn’t be fixed with a sharp blade – begins to doubt himself as he carves a path through beasts and demons. The dynamic has shifted as the oddball pair explore fantastical realms thronged with terrifying creatures and sworn enemies. In Ragnarok, reluctant father Kratos plunges into a new odyssey through Norse mythology but his son Atreus has matured from a callow boy into an assured youth. The emotional resonance formed the incongruous backdrop to a brutal brawler, an orgy of rage, violence and bloodshed carried over from earlier God of War sagas.
That multi-million-selling instalment from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio was unusual for its sensitive handling of a powerful demi-god utterly at sea as he learned to raise his son after his wife’s death. God of War: Ragnarok (out next Wednesday for PS4 and PS5) is a sequel to the 2018 reboot of the long-running hack’n’slash series.
The story arc may be familiar but the videogame setting is not most certainly not.
The next they’re a narky teenager full of back chat while capable of saving their dad’s life. One day they’re a timid child dependent on a parent for protection and wisdom.
